Jean Delaney is a Victoria based artist. Surrounded by such beauty has been pivotal in the progression of her painting journey. Jean leans heavily on colour and movement to explore the endless possibilities of creating each piece of art. She paints very quickly with large gestures, mark making and layering, embracing all imperfections.
For 10 years Jean ran her own rug hooking design business where again colour was the driving force. During that time she dabbled in painting taking several painting workshops along the way, but still considers herself self taught.
In 2012 Jean decided to dedicate to painting full time and for many years commited to the practise of completing a 6 x 6 inch painting daily, her subjects were florals, landscapes, birds, cows, cats, dogs, houses, you name it she was going to paint it. Her mind was launched into a new level of intense creativity, one which she didnt know she had. Investing this kind of time brought her knowledge of her craft, confidence and above all an understanding of who she was as an artist. After years of this practise she has narrowed her subject to her first love which is always nature.
Jean feels she has so much to express in her paintings, so everything shifted for her when she started painting on larger canvases...wow, so this is why artists love a large canvas. Her work is brimming over with colour and no you can't have too much, she thinks of pink as a neutral, the brighter the better. Jean paints what she loves and wants to share that with others.
When she heads into her studio there is a quiet elation which quickly turns into a creative chaos, with paint tubes and tools strewn over every surface the painting starts to reveal itself. It's as if the world turns off around her and she revels in every moment.
Jean's work is in collections in Canada and the United States, she is forever grateful to the people who have supported her art throughout the years.
